Hungary: Payment card market after MIF decisions

12.04.2011
With sponsorship from bnt Budapest and the bnt competition practice group, a seminar will be held on 20 April 2011 in Budapest on questions of competition and the regulatory problem of the European and Hungarian payment card markets with focus on multilateral interchange fees (MIF)

Setting multilateral interchange fees (MIF) has become a crucial question of European and Hungarian competition policy. Quite recently the European Commission initiated an investigation against both of the two big international payment card companies. In autumn 2009 the Hungarian Competition Authority (GVH) imposed a fine of almost 2 billion HUF (ca. 7,2 million EUR) on the sector, after which the Hungarian Parliament passed a law on the matter. Although the Commission most likely will approve a commitment offered by VISA on 28 May 2010, it remains an open question whether and how the regulatory development can reorganize the European and Hungarian payment card markets.

The purpose of the conference sponsored by bnt Budapest and the bnt competition practice group is to appraise the results of MIF related investigations, to do a survey and to analyze the economic consequences of regulatory intervention in the Hungarian payment card market.
